Bathroom Drain Pipe is Leaking How to Fix What to Check

Bathroom Drain Pipe is Leaking How to Fix What to Check , I installed a new bathroom faucet and it came with a new drain pipe and sink drain outlet flange. The faucet works great but the drain pipe is leaking under the sink. It is leaking into my bathroom cabinet and everything is getting wet. The leak is coming from where the plastic nuts on the drain pipe meet under the bathroom sink. I installed the sink drain pipe with a rubber sealing washer and gasket, but without any plunger tape or plunger potti. Is this why it is leaking?

If the drain pipe is leaking under your bathroom sink, you may just need to re-tighten the nut. If no plunger putty was used when installing the drain outlet flange in the sink, this is another reason for leaking. You may also have a gasket or rubber sealing washer that goes between the nut and the sink and is causing a leak. The gasket or rubber sealing washer cannot be completely flat and therefore does not have sealing. Check to see if you are able to tighten the nut with one and half turns or check for leaks. If no matter how tight the nut is and it is still leaking, take everything apart, including the drain pipe and drain outlet flange in the sink.

After taking out the bathroom sink drain outlet flange and drain pipe, inspect all parts to see if it may crack or if plastic or metal threads have been stripped. Is the gasket, rubber seal washer, drain outlet flange, drain pipe, or nut damaged? If the drain pipe and components are not damaged, you will not need any new parts, but you will need some additional items to ensure that it does not leak before reinstalling.

2 items that will help prevent a leaky sink drain pipe:
– Plunger tape (works with any fitting requiring a high quality seal – ensures a safe and tight seal)
– Plunger putty (flexible stretchable compound – molds easily – will not harden, crumble, crack or shrink)
Note: These items are optional but are used in professional plumbing to avoid leaking pipes. Use plunger tape on all threads to create a tight water seal.

What could be the reason for the leakage of water under the sink?
1 – If no plunger tape was applied, water may leak between the threads on the nut and drain pipe.
2 – Rubber sealing washer or O-ring can be overly tight due to leakage.
3 – The nut may not be tight enough and water is just coming through.
4 – Drain pipe is closed center and therefore a tight seal is not possible.
5 – Drain pipe is cracked and water is coming from the crack.
6 – Fitting for pop-up sink assembly is not tight.
7 – Sink drain leaks may occur if no plunger putty was used.

How to restore the sink drain without any leaks … (Make sure all parts are removed, cleaned, and not damaged)
1 – Add a 1/2 ring thick ring or rope of plunger cyst to the bottom of the top flange of the sink drain. (First heat the putty with your hands so that it is easy to use – make sure the plunger putty is in a continuous circle)
2 – Put some plunger tape on the threads of the drain.
3 – Use enough plunger tape to cover the thread near the area where the nut will be positioned when fully tightened.
4 – Spin the nut under or off all of the threads.
5 – Insert the drain back into the sink hole and make sure it is centered.
6 – Install and tighten nut and sealing washer. (The extra putty will exit under the top flange, until it is fully seated for the sink)
7 – Remove excess putty from the sink.
8 – Add plunger tape with threads to any area of drain pipe.
9 – Re-install the drain pipe making sure that it is centered and does not move.
10 – Run the bathroom faucet and check for water leaks under the sink.
