Fill the jar halfway with dish soap. (Don’t combine the ingredients.)

Why Is It Effective?
Vinegar is a culinary staple that is both natural and environmentally friendly. It’s an affordable element in many cleaning DIYs, in addition to its culinary purposes. Plus, unlike a lot of commercial products, vinegar doesn’t give off any hazardous or harsh fumes. It simply gives off a salad-like odour.
The smell of the cider vinegar attracts fruit flies, who will attempt to land on it. They’re in for a major surprise, though: the fruit flies fall in and drown because the dish soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar. That vexing swarm will no longer bother you.
- You can also use a bottle with a short neck.
- Even after you’ve caught your fruit flies, keep a fruit fly trap on the kitchen counter: The use of this trap will help to prevent further infestations. You can hide it in a nice container. Because vinegar evaporates over time, make sure to top it up anytime you realise it’s running low.
A Different Approach.
Fruit flies can be caught with a piece of overripe fruit in an open plastic bag if you don’t have any vinegar. Allow the fruit flies to congregate on the fruit before sealing the bag to keep them contained.
How Can You Avoid Infestations in the Future?
Here Are Some Nice Alternatives To Creating a Trap:
- Infestations are commonly caused by bringing diseased fruit home from the supermarket or produce stand. If you see fruit flies near your produce while shopping, avoid it. You can bet there are a lot of fruit fly eggs on that produce in your kitchen, ready to hatch. When you think that a single fruit fly can lay 500 eggs, it’s easy to see why you shouldn’t buy those bananas.1
- If you buy fruit, wash it once you get home to get rid of fruit fly larvae: apples, stone fruit, bananas, citrus fruits, and so on. You can use plain water, or one of the fruit and vegetable washes found in the produce section of your supermarket.
- Eat fruits and vegetables as soon as they are ripe or before they spoil. Fruit flies like ripe or fermented fruits and vegetables to lay their eggs. Keep them in the fridge for even greater results.
- Clean up your kitchen: Fruit flies can land on your counters and deposit eggs there, as well as in your sink. Make sure there’s no food waste in your garbage disposal or drain.
- Ensure that you dispose of your garbage on a regular basis. Additionally, there are recyclables: Fruit flies are attracted to small amounts of juice or wine that have been left at the bottom of bottles. If you haven’t cleaned out your kitchen trash can or recycling bins in a while, now is the time.
- Before the fruit flies remind you that you’re overdue, wash your reusable shopping bags.
