4 Reasons Your Washing Machine Smells Dirty Like Rotten Eggs
Washing Machine Smells Like Rotten Eggs Hydrogen sulphide gas is responsible for what most people describe as a rotten egg smell. The metabolism of bacteria is what produces this gas, which is frequently found in sewers.
If you can smell hydrogen sulphide emanating from your washing machine, it is probably the result of a buildup of mold, dirt, mildew, or old soap in the washing machine itself or a part of it, like the door gasket.
Fortunately, getting rid of this rotten egg smell is incredibly simple; most of the time, all you need to do is give your washing machine a thorough cleaning.
In this post, we’ll go through the primary causes of the rotten egg smell and how to get rid of it. Please note that the first two justifications are for front-loading washers; if you have a top-loading washer, you can move right on to justification number 3.
Reason 1: A foreign object in the door seal
A sizable rubber door seal (sometimes referred to as a bellow or gasket) that wraps around the door is included on front-loading washing machines. To prevent water from escaping the washing machine throughout a cycle, the door seal’s purpose is to accomplish just that.
A sock or other tiny article of clothing may occasionally become trapped inside the gasket, where it may eventually grow mildew. This may begin to smell like rotten eggs if left out for a long period.
You just need to do the following to ensure sure nothing is stuck in the door seal:
- Remove the door seal and check inside for any stray garment articles.
- Take them out if you find any.
- Use hot, soapy water to thoroughly clean the door gasket.
- After cleaning, keep the door ajar so it may dry and breathe.
Cleaning Hint: For your front-loading washer to dry out properly, it is advised that you keep the door open after each cycle. Additionally, this prevents mould and mildew from growing.
2. A clogged drain cap or pump
An obstructed drain plug in your front-loading washer is the problem’s next potential root cause. In the majority of models, the front, sides, or rear of the washer each include a drain plug for the appliance’s bottom.
All you have to do to inspect the drain stopper and filter is:
- Find the drain plug.
- Remove the cover plate, if one is present.
- Remove the cap once you have accessed the drain plug. Make sure you have an old towel on hand because it can leak some water.
- After removing the stopper, reach into the hole and take out the drain filter.
- Use hot, soapy water in the sink to thoroughly clean the filter and drain stopper.
- Using hot, soapy water, clean the region between the drain stopper and filter.
- Fill a glass with hot water and a few drops of white vinegar, and pour it into the washing machine drum. The water should then run out through the hose, clearing out any dirt that may have been lodged inside.
- Reinstall the parts in your washing machine after you have cleaned them all. Run your washing machine through a cleaning cycle and inspect the sewage if you can still smell the rotten egg odour (see reason 4 below).
3. Your washing machine is filthy.
Give your top-loading washing machine a thorough cleaning if you want to get rid of the rotten egg smell. Mold, filth, and mildew can begin to accumulate in your washing machine if you don’t give it a regular clean, and an unpleasant odour may start to appear.
This is how to clean your washing machine:
- Unlock the door to the washer.
- Adjust your washer’s heat and load capacities to the highest possible levels.
- When the water inside the washer begins to fill, add 1 quart of bleach (or 4 cups) to the liquid.
- After the washer has filled with water, shut the lid and start the long spin cycle. Following the completion of the cycle, switch off the washing machine for about an hour before turning it back on and starting a regular wash cycle.
- After the wash cycle is over, reheat it to the hottest setting and fullest capacity. When it is filling up, add 3 cups of white vinegar and 1/2 cup of baking soda.
- Close the lid and start a long spin cycle in the washer once it is full. Open the lid once the spin cycle has completed and clean the washing machine with a fresh cloth.
- Before using the washing machine again, leave the lid open and allow it to dry for a few hours. You must inspect the sewer if your washing machine still smells like rotten eggs (see below).
4. A clogged sewer
If cleaning your washing machine didn’t help, a plugged sewer or drain is the only other possibility for why you might be smelling rotten eggs coming from your washer. When this occurs, the odour could enter your washing machine through the drain line.
How to fix this issue is as follows:
- Find the standpipe that is attached to your sink where the drain hose is linked; this is usually where it is connected.
- Take the hose off the standpipe and smell the standpipe to see if there is a rotten egg smell.
- If the region is offensive, start by thoroughly cleaning it with hot, soapy water.
- Another potential cause of the scent is a malfunctioning p-trap that allowed sewer gas to enter the washing machine through the drain hose. Fill a bucket with hot, soapy water and pour it down the standpipe to fix the issue. If the scent disappears, the p-trap was to blame. The p-trap may stop working and then start again after pouring hot water down the drain, or it may require replacement. You must hire a plumber to replace the p-trap if the scent reappears.
