Whirlpool Washer Error Code F21 – Drilling Error – How to Fix?

Whirlpool washer error code F21 means that the washing machine has a “water drainage problem”, which means that the drain pump itself is there, or the drain hose is closed and the washer is having trouble getting water out. In other words, the washer is taking too long to drain water from the tub.

Most COMMON reasons for displaying the F21 error code on the Whirlpool washer:

– The washer drain hose located behind the washer drain may be blocked or bent with lint.
– The drain filter on the drain pump may be blocked or clogged.
The washer drain pump located at the bottom of the washer may have a large blockage.
-Washer drain pump can be faulty and needs to be removed and replaced.

Other UNCOMMON reasons for displaying F21 error code on Whirlpool washer:

-Pren pump wiring harness is damaged or harness does not have secure connection to or from main control board.
– If the pressure switch is faulty there may be a loss of communication from the drain pump to the main control board.
– The drain that drains water can be blocked. (Drain in the wall or floor where drain goes into the tube)

What to do when your Whirlpool washer shows an F21 error code:

1 – Check the drain hose located behind the washer to ensure that it is not clogged, bent or blocked in any way. Remove the drain hose and ensure that there are no large lint blockages that are preventing the washer from draining the water. Also make sure that the drain in the wall (where the drain hose drains the water) is not blocked or filled.
(Take care when moving the washer forward – pay attention to the water lines and electrical cord so that you do not drain them out)
Note: If the drain hose was closed and you cleaned the drain hose of any obstruction or twist, run a test wash to see if the F21 error has now been cleared.

2 – Remove the bottom floor access panel and drain power into the washing machine to access the drain pump, drain filter, and wiring inside the washer.
(You can access the drain pump and drain pump filter by removing the screws on the front lower panel on the washer – then you will see wiring on the drain pump, drain filter (lint trap) and drain pump)

3 – Once the power is removed from the washer and the lower panel is removed, place a large towel or low profile cooking tray on the floor to hold any water that is still in the drain filter. Opening the drain filter, some water will drain and there will be the possibility of many foreign objects inside blocking the flow of water. Clean the debris filter (lint trap) and put the cap back on.
(Usually the drain pump filter is filled with debris and when trying to drain the water, debris in the filter prevents water from seeping out and hence exhibits an F21 error).
Note: If the drain filter was full and you cleaned the filter of any obstruction, put everything back together and run a test wash to see if the F21 error has now cleared up.

4 – Check that the wiring harness on the drain pump itself is safe and there is no damage to the wiring.
(Loose or damaged wiring will not send power to the drain pump and hence the drain pump cannot drain)
Note: If the drain pump had a loose wire harness and you had secured it, put everything back together and run a test wash to see if the F21 error had now cleared up.
5 – Check the drain lines of water which are connected to the drain pump to ensure that there are no obstructions in the lines.
(Water drain lines connected to the drain pump may be filled with lint or other foreign debris and stop the drainage process leading to error code F21)
6 – Checking the pressure switch / water level switch make sure that it is working properly.
(To go to the pressure switch, remove the power to the washer, unscrew the top panel, remove the 3 screws behind the washer and the pressure switch is on the right side and a small hose with a small disc connector like Looks) in its favor)
7 – After cleaning the drain filter, pressure switch (if applicable), checking drain lines, and wiring harness, you can put the panel back, return the power to the washer to try the test wash. can be applied. Run a test wash. If the test wash is successful and does not display an F21 error code, then you have fixed your washer.
(If error code F21 reappears after doing all of the above, you will need to remove the power, remove the panel, remove the drain pump from the washer, and find out if the drain pump is internally, mechanically Defective or electrically defective)
If after troubleshooting and you assume that the drain pump is the problem, make sure that the drain pump is getting power when the drain cycle starts. The drain pump should get 120vac voltage when pumping. If so, it may appear that the drain pump is not working, but it may in fact be that the control board is faulty and is not sending power to the drain pump when the drain cycle begins.
After making sure that the drain cycle starts when the drain pump is receiving power from the washer, you can assume that the problem is the pump itself. You must troubleshoot the drain pump. You can take it apart and check it internally for obstruction. If the drain pump is mechanically defective or electrically defective, you will need to replace the drain pump.

Note: The F21 error code on the Whirlpool washers officially means that there is a problem with the DRAIN PUMP. We have found that the F21 error code will be displayed even when another part of the washer fails or remains closed. This usually occurs with drain pumps that have partial blockage and another component of the washer has failed, damaged, blocked, or is full.
