Some Whirlpool dishwashers display an error code by flashing a clean light on the display in a pattern. If your Whirlpool dishwasher does not have a digital display, Clean Light will flash the function code and Clean Light will stop for 2 seconds and then flash the problem code. You need to count the number of clean light flashes to find the error code on your Whirlpool dishwasher. As an example: if the clean light comes on 5 times after 2 flashes (5-2), then this error is showing function code = “door problem” and the problem code is “door switch is in question”. The flashing light patterns repeat again after a 5 second pause.

Note: The control panel console is completely non-functional when an error code flashes.
Note: You can try running a diagnostic test cycle to find errors. The beginning of the testing cycle is different on dishwasher models.
Try the action below to run a diagnostic test on your dishwasher:
1 – Turn on the dishwasher.
2 – Press the Rinse cycle button.
3 – Turn the dishwasher back off.
4 – When you turn the dishwasher back on, hold down the start button.
5 – When the light starts flashing, immediately let go with the start button.
6 – Press the start button once and close the dishwasher door.
7 – The test cycle must begin.
8 – If an error is found then the cycle will stop, flashing error code will then be displayed.

Error state = float switch is open or stuck electrically
Repair or check = Check the overfill float switch and make sure it is not stuck. There is something under it that is holding it. Ensure that the water inlet fill valve is closing when the dishwasher is closed.

Error case = the water in the dishwasher is too cold
Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the water coming into the dishwasher. If the water is below 110F degrees then check your water heater. Adjust the water heater if necessary. If the water temperature in the dishwasher is between 110F to 120F degrees, replace the thermistor / optical water indicator or the final control electronic control board.
