What Do The Cables On The Back Of Your TV Do?

Back Of A Tv back of a tv Quick reference to the most common types of TV wires to help you quickly set up your TV and achieve the greatest picture and sound quality possible. TV wires and cables come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Back in the day, all televisions had was a place to plug in an antenna. There were no confusing wires to deal with, and figuring out which wires you needed was not an issue. When looking at the back or sides of today’s contemporary HD televisions, you’ll likely discover numerous ports where various types of cables can be plugged in. How can you know which ones you’ll need or which will be the most effective? All of this will be explained further down.

TV wires and cables come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Wires For Audio And Video

Video Component
Component video cables/wires are easy to recognise since they have three distinct wires: one Red, one Blue, and one Green. Each of these provides the proper colour signal to the television, resulting in a crisp, clear image. Most recent TVs have a place to plug in component wires; look for three holes in a row that match the colours of the wires.

RCA Cables

RCA or RYW cables/wires, like Component video cables/wires, are essentially three distinct wires combined into one. The only difference is that instead of Red, Green, and Blue, these wires come in Red, Yellow, and White. These lines, commonly known as RCA cables or component cables, carry not only a visual signal (on the yellow wire) but also left and right audio signals (on the red and white wires). These are an outdated technology that is rarely found in newer televisions.

S-Video Cable

This line, sometimes known as Super Video, sends video signals from a gadget to your television. It’s a step up from Component video wiring, and the picture quality is quite good. This is the way to go if your television has an S-Video input but doesn’t have HDMI. Keep in mind that S-Video only transmits video; audio will require a separate connection.

HDMI Cable

The HDMI cable is the most common cable/wire used on HDTVs nowadays. An HDMI cable delivers high-definition video and audio from a device to a television, allowing you to use only one wire for the job. It also has the maximum capacity, which means less signal loss and hence better quality. Each end of an HDMI cable is shaped like a trapezoid, with tiny pins inside that connect to the device and the television. High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is an acronym for High-Definition Multimedia Interface.

Digital Audio Optical Cable

If you’re sending video over a dedicated wire, such as Component Video or S-Video, you’ll also need something to deliver the audio signal. Digital audio cables, often known as optical cables, deliver a high-quality sound stream that is nearly as good as HDMI. If you can’t utilise HDMI, or if you require a dedicated audio stream for any other reason, consider using a Digital Audio Cable. A Digital Optical Audio Cable, which produces the highest sound quality, can also be used with a soundbar or surround sound system.

TV Signal Wires

Coax Cables

You’ll need a signal from somewhere if you want to view live television. This signal is often delivered over a Coax cable to cable owners. This cable runs from the street to your cable box. You don’t have to worry about signal quality because it can often handle a big volume of data.

High-Definition Antennas

Finally, you’ll need to attach an antenna if you’re getting your channels over the radio. See if your television can accept an antenna signal by looking at the back of it or reading the handbook. If this is the case, check for the label designating this port and plug your antenna in.
