Wire Color Code Chart – Electrical Wire Color Codes

Wire Color Code Chart When wiring a switch or outlet, be aware of electrical wire colour codes. Every wire in an electrical circuit in the United States is identified by a standard home electrical wiring color code. You’ll find the answers here if you need to know what the wire colours for electrical wiring are, what colour the live or hot wire is, or what colour the ground wire is in your electrical system.

When wiring a light switch or other electrical component, you must know what colour wire performs what. Knowing which wire goes where can assist you in safely wiring or rewiring an electrical component.
SAFETY: Before wiring or rewiring a switch or outlet, turn off the power to the circuit or use a multimeter to ensure the wire is not HOT or LIVE.

Color Codes for Electrical Wires

WIRES IN GREEN

This is the GROUND wire, which is used to GROUND an electrical circuit. A bare wire, a green wire, or a green wire with a faint yellow stripe can all be used as ground wires.

WIRES IN BLACK
They transport energy from the breaker to the source and are known as the HOT wire.

WIRES, WHITE/GRAY

The NEUTRAL wires collect unneeded electricity/current and return it to the breakers or main breaker panel.

WIRES IN YELLOW

Structural lights, outlets with light switches, and ceiling fans all have switch legs.

WIRES IN BLUE

They’re commonly employed as passengers in three- or four-way switches.

WIRES IN RED

In 220 volt circuits, secondary live wires are used. A multi conductor cable contains red wires. Red wires are typically utilised for switch wiring and connecting hardwired smoke detectors to the electrical circuit.

See the electrical wire colour code diagram below for a visual representation of each wire’s colour and function…

BE AWARE: If wiring is not done correctly, all electrical cables may carry electrical current. Treat all wiring as if it were LIVE or HOT at all times.
NOTE: If the wiring has not been updated, older residences built before 1941 may have a variety of wire colour codes. As a result, exercise extreme caution and check with a multimeter to ensure that any wire colours are not HOT or LIVE.
